Stongdey Monastery
is also written as Stongde Monastery, Stongday Monastery, Tonday or Thonde,which is a successful Buddhist monastery. The stongdey monastery was founded by Naropa's disciple in 1052 CE who was the famous translator Lama Marpa Lotsawa (1012-1097). Stongdey gonpa lies on a hilltop around 10 kms to the north of Padum on the way to Zangla. It takes around 3 hours on foot to reach Stongdey Marpaling. The towering height of the mountains on which the monastery stands gives you a wonderful view of the valley below. It was taken over by the Gelugpa about four centuries later and became dedicated to Je Tsongkhapa.stongdey monastery
is measured to be second major monastic institute in the Zanskar region. The Stongde Gompa Zanskar Ladakh serves as the residence of approximately 60 monks. It is the second major monastery in Zanskar region.Stongdey Gompa Zanskar contains a total of seven temples at all. Tshogs-khang is ornamented with beautiful painting which includes some with deity on a black background outline in gold. The main success of the Stongdey Monastery comes under the control of Shakya Zangpo, of Stongdey itself. It include number of beautiful temples which are situated inside the complex of stongdey Gompa. Another major attraction of the monastery consists of the gorgeous wall paintings adorning its interiors. Stongdey Gompa Zanskar serves as the place of Gustor festival, an annual festival which takes place on the 28th and 29th day in the eleventh month of the Tibetan calendar.
