Stok Monastery
Ladakh was founded by Lama Lhawang Lotus during the period of influence of king Takpa Bumlde. This monastery is a secondary of Spitok monastery.Stok Gompa
belongs to the yellow-hat sect of Buddhism and the number of lamas is only 20 that reside in the monastery. Moreover oldest part of stok monastery Ladakh is 550 years old but the main assembly hall is just 50 years old.When we enter the courtyard there is a tall prayer flag pole an on entering to the verandah there is colourful wall paintings of the Guardians of the four walls. The assembly hall has been painted with new colors and rooms have been decorated with banners.The entrance wall on either side of the door depict large number of guardian divinities. On to the left side of wall, an image of Vajrapani , while the Avalokitesvara in his four-armed manifestation image on the left side. Avalokitesvara is recognized as the Lord of All He Surveys and it is thought to be reincarnated in the Dalai Lama. On the right side of wall, an image of Sakyamuni which is called as the Historical Buddha flanked by his two chief disciples. On the right there is also an image of Amchi which is recognized as the Buddha of Medicine and it is painted in red color, flanked by Tara on the right and Nangyalma on the left.
An image of Amchi on the left having a painting of Sakyamuni on to the front of the Dukhang in stok monastery ladakh The central throne is kept only for the Dalai Lama and for the head lama to the right .There is an inspiring image of Yamadhaka which is a fierce guardian divinity.Behind the assembly hall there is a small chapel which is the oldest part of the monastery that is to be entered through doors by the side of the throne seats. An image of Tsong-kha-pa who was the founder of the yellow hat sect of Tibettan Buddhism is there.
On the right of this two-storey high image;it has three small statues: a yellow-hat lama and two of Sakyamuni.On the left of the central image is having another lama known as Avalokitesvara in his four-armed manifestation and the Future Buddha. By the wall on the right is an image of the gompa's founder, Nawang Lotus image is laying by the wall of Stok Gompa. There are number of Buddha images on the right of chapel.On leaving this chapel, by going upstairs in front of it for two flights, emerges on a small upper courtyard. Straight across the courtyard there is a door which is leads to the head lama's apartment which is adorned with several thankhas but is mostly notable for the complex woodcarving on the two low tables in front of the seat.
