Sani Monastery
is situated in Zanskar in Jammu and Kashmir, 6km to the west of Padum. Sani monastery is also known as Turtot Gyat and it is considered to be one of the eight holy places of the Buddhist. Since it is situated just 6 kms away it takes merely two hours to reach there. Dzongkhul Monastery in Zanskar is the only monastery where the nuns live in that belongs to the Drukpa Kargyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Sani monastery is to be considered as the oldest religious site of Ladakh and Zanskar which makes one of the famous kargil sightseeing.Sani monastery is also claim to be connected with the famous Indian Yogi Naropa .One small room next to the Kanika chorten have been made and it is considered that Naropa meditates in which there is a oblique bronze sculpture of the yogi. The assembly hall contains 16 columns and keeps always images of Chamba; Chenren .Gonghang is a small room containing olden pictures of Cho Rinpoche. There are also bookshelves that are holding sacred volumes of the Kangyur. But the smaller temple is devoted to Naropa which is ornamented with base reliefs in stucco which is painted in bright coloring the cremation ground; there is a two metre high boulder with a painting of Maitreya on it which shines from the sacrificial oil poured over it by pilgrims. Nungnes do not have fixed rate but it happens in the month of July. Between the 15th and the 20th of the sixth of Tibetan month Sani Naro-Nasjal festival is celebrated.
