On the Manali to Leh road way, the Rohtang is the first mountain pass on the Pir-Panjal range in Himachal Pradesh between Manali and Lahul. Rohtang Pass is the last mountain pass with dense cover of vegetation on the way to Ladakh. It is also the business pass for a rare number of domestic tourists making a day trip to the pass. The first place to meet after descending from the Rohtang pass is called Khoskar, which has a check post along with div shops including restaurants and tea stalls.
Lahaul
Lahaul has several inhabited villages along the Chandra and the Bagha River. It is a typical trans Himalayan landscape. Earlier, Lahaul was a part of Ladakh. The houses in this area are built of mud bricks like in Ladakh. Keylong is the main town of Lahaul & Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. Keylong has good restaurants and hotels. The road follows the Bhaga River towards its source, passing by a few villages of Gemour, Jispa and Darcha.
Darcha
It is the last village of Himachal Pradesh on the road to Leh. The road leads you to villages and passes and to an expansive wilderness. Darcha is where the government buses stop for the night. It is the finishing or the starting point of Lamayuru to Darcha trek via Padum. There are many div restaurants at Darcha, which also offer accommodation for Rs. 50 – 100 per bed per night.
Baralacha-La
Baralacha-la is a pass where the trail Spiti falls on the southeast. This is the crossing point of the great Himalayan watershed between the Indus and China.
Sarchu
After a few kilometers from Baralacha, the road leads to a sprawling valley, situated on the border of Himachal Pradesh & Ladakh. Sarchu is a stopper for tourist buses and taxis coming from Manali and leh. Himachal Tourism offers tented accommodation for the passengers coming by bus as well as for other tourists. Private camping also costs the same and the bargain is inevitable. The road thereafter enters the J&K border.
Pang Via lachung-La
It is a pass, which falls between Sarchu and pang, it takes almost half a day to reach the point where the buses stop for Ladakh at the tented restaurants near the river. The restaurants offer other basic food like Rice Dal and Tea etc. and a bed for Rs. 50 per night.
Taklang-La
Another sprawling pastureland suddenly comes in the journey, which leads to Taklang-la. A few kilometers before Taklang-la there is a rough road to the right side leading to Tsomoriri and Tsokar Lake. After crossing Taklang-la reach the Rumtse village followed by Gya. The road then follows the village stream down to the Indus at Upshi – you can have a brief stop for tea. There is a check post that lies on the route leading to Leh. On the way you come across several villages, including Kharu, Stakna, Tiksey, Shey and Choglamsar before finally reaching Leh.
