Alchi is another beautiful and historically famous and significant small village and is located on the banks of River Indus that is 70 kms downhill from the capital of Leh region of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir. In Ladakh, the Gompas or monasteries are always positioned on highhill, but whereas Alchi is located on lowland.
Alchi also has the oldest monasteries around 1000 years old and a temple called Dhu-Kang that goes back to 11th century or 12th century and houses some of the well preserved Indo-Himalayan sytle magnificent wall paintings. The Alchi monastery is not only a worshipping place for Buddhist but a study centre too.
The Alchi village houses some of the good homestays for the visitors or tourists. That offers modern ease and comfortable overnight stay with enough privacy. Another important factor about village Alchi is that, it is blessed with mouth watering and delectable fruits like Apricots and the Plums in many folds.
A must visit place in Ladakh that is open and accessible to the tourists from June to September.
Alchi is connected with main cities in India by flights. The nearest airport to the Alchi is Leh airport. Leh airport is well connected to main Indian cities like Pune, Delhi, Jammu, and Srinagar. Alchi Monastery
Alchi monastery is about 70 Kms away from Leh and it is placed on the banks of the Indus river on the path from Leh to Kargil. It just takes just 90 minutes to reach at Alchi Monastery from Leh. It is mainly known for its superb and well-maintained 11th or 12th century wall paintings, which are in Indo-Himalayan style.
Alchi Gompa Ladakh is positioned at an altitude of 10,200 feet. Alchi Monastery Ladakh is also division of three villages which are situated in lower Ladakh region which make up the 'Alchi group of monuments'Mangyu and Sumda Chun. Alchi monastery leh is well-known as a monastic complex of temples that consists of three shrines: the Dukhang which is nothing but an Assembly hall, the Sumtseg and the temple of Manjushree.
